San Yan Er Pai "refers to a collection of five famous legendary short stories and a collection of pseudo stories from the Ming Dynasty. The 'Three Words' are collectively referred to as the' Clear Words of the World ',' Warning Words of the World ', and' Awakening Words of the World '. The author is Feng Menglong from the Ming Dynasty. 'Erpai' is a collective term for the collection of Chinese vernacular novels' The Amazing Story of the First Moment 'and' The Amazing Story of the Second Moment '. Author Ling Mengchu.
Feng Menglong (1574-1646), also known as Youyou, was a native of Changzhou (now Wu County, Jiangsu Province). His courtesy names were Mohanzi and Guqu Sanren. Under the influence of the Enlightenment movement in the late Ming Dynasty, Feng Menglong devoted himself to the creation and editing of popular literature, achieving remarkable results. According to his achievements, he can be called the first outstanding popular literary figure in the history of Chinese literature, just as people at that time said: 'The works of Confucius fill the world.'. He has made his own contribution to Chinese literature. In March of the 17th year of the Chongzhen reign (1644), Li Zicheng entered Beijing and the Ming Dynasty fell. Feng Menglong, like other literati, deeply felt the disaster and was extremely saddened. In order to promote resistance against the Qing Dynasty, he traveled between Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian with the feeling of 'suddenly remembering his homeland' until his death.
In "Yu Shi Ming Yan", works depicting themes of love and marriage occupy a prominent position. Some directly reflect the social reality at that time and expose the darkness of society; Some reflect the lives of the lower middle class people in the city and praise the loyal friendship between friends. Some works also reflect the developed commercial society of the Ming Dynasty and the spiritual outlook of small and medium-sized merchants. There are also many works that contain negative ideas of feudal preaching and karma. It is one of the important anthologies of the Ming Dynasty's' vernacular 'and' pseudo vernacular 'novels, and also an important reference material for later generations to study' vernacular 'novels.
Most of the works in 'A Warning to the World' depict the various aspects of citizens' lives, depicting the persecution they suffered under the rule of feudal dark forces and their resistance struggles. The depiction of love accounts for a considerable proportion in the work "A Warning to the World", which generally reflects the common social problems at that time, especially the unfortunate experiences of women. There are also some works that promote loyalty in "A Warning to the World", such as "Lv Dalang Returns the Golden Bone and Blood" emphasizing the importance of not sacrificing wealth, "Zhao Taizu's Thousand Mile Farewell to Jingniang" highlighting selflessness in helping others, and "Guiyuan's Confession on a Poor Road" criticizing ungrateful behavior from the opposite side. These works reflect the moral values of the urban class. Overall, 'A Warning to the World' represents the pinnacle of ancient vernacular short stories, constructing its own unique artistic world.
The book 'Awakening the World' is the most widely circulated, influential, and talked about among the 'Three Words'. It exhibits some unique characteristics in both content and subject matter, and is more mature in art. In the book "Awakening the World", the most famous one is "Encountering Friends at the Shi Runze Beach Que", which depicts the prosperity of urban and rural industry and commerce in the mid to late Ming Dynasty; In terms of marriage and love themes, the most brilliant one is "The Oil Salesman monopolizes the Flower Queen", which expresses the concept of love among citizens and reflects their different thoughts and attitudes towards gender relations from the feudal ruling class, achieving the most outstanding achievements.
In short, "San Yan" is the first large-scale collection of vernacular short stories in the history of ancient Chinese literature. It is the beginning of the independent creation of vernacular short stories in China, based on the art of rap, after being sorted and processed by literati. It is a collection of the most important vernacular short stories from the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. Its emergence marks the arrival of a climax in the compilation and creation of ancient Chinese vernacular short stories.

The author Ling Mengchu (1580-1644), also known as Xuanfang, Chucheng, or Kongguan Master, was from Wucheng, Zhejiang (now Wuxing). He was born into a bureaucratic family and was enthusiastic about fame and fortune when he was young, but his fate was not good. He was only appointed as a deputy magistrate of Shanghai County at the age of 55. In the fifteenth year of the Chongzhen reign (1642), he was promoted to the position of General Judge in Xuzhou and was assigned to Fangcun to handle river affairs. He was born in the late Ming Dynasty, lamenting the dark corruption of the government and being hostile to peasant uprisings. In the end, he vomited blood and died to resist the attack of Li Zicheng's army. During the Tianqi period, when he had no hope of achieving fame and was filled with resentment and stranded in Nanjing, he was influenced by the literary atmosphere at that time and began to engage in the creation of pseudo scripts. Later, at the request of merchants, he edited and published his own works, which became known as' The Amazing Stories'. The book "Amazing Stories" is divided into two episodes - "The First Engraved Amazing Stories" (completed in 1627 during the seventh year of the Tianqi reign of the late Ming Dynasty and published the following year) and "The Second Engraved Amazing Stories" (published in 1632 during the fifth year of the Chongzhen reign). Unlike "San Yan", "Er Pai" is a completely independent creation by the author, thus maintaining the unity of the ideological and artistic style throughout the book.
