序言
《苔丝》是英国十九世纪批判现实主义文学的代表作之一，同时也是世界文学史上不可多得的瑰宝。
小说作者托马斯·哈代，生于一八四○年，卒于一九二八年，是一位颇具诗人气质的现实主义作家，一生著作甚丰，计有长篇小说十四部，短篇小说集四部，诗集八部。其中最负盛名的是《苔丝》与《无名的裘德》。
