本书作者丹尼尔·笛福（1660—1731）生活在英国资产阶级革命得以巩固、工商业迅速发展，并伴随着迅猛发展的海外贸易和猖狂的海外扩张的资本主义原始积累时期。笛福属于小资产阶级阶层，他父亲是个小油烛商。笛福在二十岁的时候，也成了一个小商人，主要做过烟、酒等贸易。他们不信奉英国国教，而信仰新教，并在经商的同时从事一些政治活动。一七。二年曾写出《对待非国教徒之最简便办法》一本小册子，并因此而入狱和枷刑示众。后经大臣哈勒相助出狱。后来又几次因言论而被逮捕。他在五十九岁时写出这本杰作《鲁宾逊漂流记》，获得巨大成功。之后又写了一些小说，较有名气的有《杰克上校》、《辛格顿船长》、《摩尔弗兰德斯》、《罗克查娜》等。晚年，他写了一些有关政治和经济方面的著作，如《不列颠周游记》、《英国商业计划》等。最后因躲债于一七三一年客死他乡。
《鲁宾逊漂流记》共分为三部分，第一部分写的是鲁宾逊离家三次航海的经历，在巴西买了种植园；第二部分是小说的主体，写鲁宾逊在荒岛上的种种经历；第三部分则是写他离开荒岛之后的事情，主要的经历是由陆路返回时，从葡萄牙回英国途中遇到狼群的事情。而第一和第三部分没有什么可取之处，第二部分展现了鲁宾逊这个人物的所有特征，是全书的精华，因此中译本大多是第二部分，我们现在出版的这本书也是这一部分。
小说塑造了鲁宾逊这个人物，他的原型是一位名叫亚历山大-塞尔柯克的苏格兰水手。另外，还写了一个星期五作为主要陪衬，其余则全为无足轻重的陪衬人物。
书中写了鲁宾逊这样一个具有典型性格的主人公，他不满足现状，不停地追求，热爱劳动，刚强不屈，坚毅不拔，他是新的人物形象，是中小资产阶级心中的英雄人物。
