莫泊桑，法国著名的自然主义小说家，享有“世界短篇小说之王”的美誉。

1850年生于法国，十三岁进入伊斯弗特教会学校，开始写诗。三十岁那年，他因在左拉主编的《梅塘夜话》中发表短篇小说《羊脂球》而一举成名，并从此埋头写作。曾经投师福楼拜门下，受其影响顿为深远。福楼拜常常对莫泊桑说：“所谓才气，就是长期坚持不懈地努力！”莫泊桑不负严师所望，创作十分勤奋，短短十年间，完成十六部短篇小说集，六部长篇小说，三部游记，一个剧本以及许多杂文，是一位非常勤奋的作家。不过在所有作品中，仍以短篇小说成就最高。莫泊桑擅长从平凡琐碎的事物中撷取富有典型意义的片断，深入刻画出种种耐人寻味的人情世态。

莫泊桑于1893年因精神病死于巴塞精神病院。他的一生，正如他自己所描述的：“像一颗慧星，一闪即逝”。
