Preface to Grand Historian No. 70
Sima Qian and His Records of the Grand Historian
Content Introduction
Sima Qian, also known as Zichang, was a historian, thinker, and literary figure of the Western Han Dynasty. Born in Xiayang (now Nanzhichuan Town, Hancheng, Shaanxi) in 145 BC, Sima Qian was born in Longmen. Father Sima Tan was appointed as the Grand Historian. Sima Tan had always wanted to emulate the spirit of Confucius in writing the Spring and Autumn Annals and write a complete historical book, but unfortunately he only made some preparations and passed away in Luoyang. As the Grand Historian, Sima Qian was tasked with recording the history of the previous dynasty. In his preface to "The Biography of the Grand Historian," he pointed out the responsibilities of being a Grand Historian, saying, "If I were to take charge of my official duties and fail to uphold the virtues of the Ming Dynasty and the noble families and officials who have made great contributions, I would be extremely guilty." Therefore, Sima Qian was determined to uphold the sense of responsibility of his ancestors and to write the "Records of the Grand Historian" by recounting the past to reflect on future generations.
The Records of the Grand Historian is the first comprehensive history in Chinese history, consisting of twelve chapters, ten tables, eight books, thirty chapters on aristocratic families, and seventy biographies, totaling 130 chapters and over 500000 words. It records a history of more than 3000 years from the legendary era of the Yellow Emperor in ancient times to the first year of Emperor Wu of Han's Yuanshou reign. This chapter serves as the general outline of the entire book of "Records of the Grand Historian" and serves as a guiding principle. Using chronology as the body, record the genealogy of emperors throughout history, with dynasties being the main focus for those who are older, and emperors or actual rulers being the main focus for those who are slightly younger. Aristocratic families use chronology as a system to record the titles of nobles, founding heroes, and individuals with special status and influence. It may not involve the whole country, but it has a huge impact on a certain aspect of a country or social life, and most of it can be regarded as national history. Biographies have played a role in enriching and concretizing this book, and can be divided into two categories: one is biographies of individuals, with specialized biographies of one person and one biography, and joint biographies of two or more people. The range of recorded characters is extremely wide, involving various social classes. Another type is the recording of foreign or domestic ethnic minorities, involving the history of Sino foreign relations and domestic ethnic relations.
The Records of the Grand Historian initially had no fixed title, also known as the "Book of the Grand Historian" or "Biography of the Grand Historian", and was also referred to as the "Grand Historian". The "Records of the Grand Historian" was originally a general term for ancient historical books. Starting from the Three Kingdoms period, "Records of the Grand Historian" gradually became the specialized term for "Official Records of the Grand Historian" instead of the general term for historical books. The Records of the Grand Historian, along with later books such as the Book of Han (Ban Gu), the Book of Later Han (Fan Ye), and the Records of the Three Kingdoms (Chen Shou), are collectively referred to as the "Four Histories". Together with Sima Guang's "Zizhi Tongjian", it is known as the "twin gems of historiography".
The biographical style created by "Records of the Grand Historian" is a pioneering work that has had a profound impact on the field of historical studies. From then on, from Ban Gu's "Book of Han" to the "Draft History of Qing Dynasty" in the early Republic of China, over the past two thousand years, the history of each dynasty has been revised. Although there have been some additions and changes in certain items, the most important records and biographies have invariably followed the format of the "Records of the Grand Historian" and become traditional. As the first of the "Twenty Four Histories", "Records of the Grand Historian" holds an important position in the history of Chinese literature. It was praised by Lu Xun as the "swan song of historians" and "Li Sao without rhyme", with high literary value.
The Complete Collection of Stories in the Records of the Grand Historian selects hundreds of popular and timeless stories from the Records of the Grand Historian, presenting the profound historical and cultural connotations of this epic work in a form that is both elegant and popular, and easy to understand. In order to provide more people with a more intuitive understanding of history, this book is accompanied by hundreds of exquisite embroidered images based on the story content, which complement and interpret the textual content, making readers feel as if they are in a real three-dimensional historical museum and gaining more visual experience and imagination space. Studying the Records of the Grand Historian not only enriches one's knowledge of historical studies, but more importantly, it allows one to use history as a mirror to explore the laws, experiences, and lessons of social development and the rise and fall of a country, and to find coordinates on the path of life.
