Abstract
The Twenty Four Histories, a general term for the twenty-four historical books written by various dynasties in ancient China, are the orthodox historical books adopted by the dynasties throughout history, and are therefore also known as "official histories". It starts with the legendary Yellow Emperor (around 2550 BC) and ends in the 17th year of the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty (1644). It consists of 3213 volumes, approximately 40 million words, and is written in a unified biographical style consisting of a main chronicle and a series of biographies. In 1921, the President of the Republic of China, Xu Shichang, ordered the inclusion of the "New History of the Yuan Dynasty" in the official history, which was collectively referred to as the "Twenty Five Histories" along with the "Twenty Four Histories". However, in most places, the "New History of the Yuan Dynasty" was not included, and instead the "Draft History of the Qing Dynasty" was listed as one of the Twenty Five Histories, or both books were included in the official history, forming the "Twenty Six Histories".
