Abstract
As widely recognized as one of the earliest surviving military theory classics, "The Art of War Collection of Sun Tzu" has been favored by people for thousands of years due to its profound theoretical content, complete and systematic ideological system, and philosophical quotes. Zhang Yanling's "Collected Edition of Sun Tzu's Art of War" provides a commentary on the book, including the ways to win in war taught by Sun Tzu's Art of War, the victorious tactics taught by Sun Tzu's Art of War, and the modern decision-making theory still applicable.
The Collected Works of Sun Tzu's Art of War, with its profound theories, dominates the field of military theory from ancient to modern times.
It was already widely circulated during the Warring States period. The Collected Works of Sun Tzu's Art of War is listed as the first of the "Seven Books of Military Classics" and has always been respected by Chinese military and strategists. Today, this ancient military strategy shines with its unique brilliance in many fields. From political struggles, economic decisions, and diplomatic strategies to sports competitions and daily work, more and more people are drawing inspiration from Zhang Yanling's "Sun Tzu's Art of War Collection".
Digest
In the Spring and Autumn Period, during turbulent times, heroes emerged one after another, and many rulers believed that whoever had an army and strong military strength could win. But Sun Tzu opposed this attitude, believing that "soldiers are the great affairs of the country, the place of life and death, and the way of survival. They cannot be ignored." Raising an army to fight is a great destruction and devastation to the country and individuals, wealth and life, and cannot be easily launched into war.
Zhang Yu pointed out in the "Annotations on Sun Tzu" of the Eleventh Family that "the way of using military force is led by strategy." "Strategy is calculated in the temple, and winning first and then fighting is called it." Winning first runs through and leads the other "six victories." Without sufficient conditions and grasp of defeating the enemy, and without planning and strategizing for the overall situation of the war, one cannot "know victory," "win completely," or "win because of victory. The thirteen chapters of "Sun Tzu" are led by "Ji Pian", which emphasizes the importance of planning and winning first, reflecting the brilliance of Sun Tzu's strategic thinking.
After the death of Qin Shi Huang, the second emperor of Qin, Hu Hai, came to power, and Zhao Gao monopolized the military and political power. The political situation of the Qin Dynasty became even darker and more chaotic. Zhao Gao's tyranny and brutality made everyone in the Manchu Dynasty feel insecure, and no one dared to report to Emperor II the extremely serious political, military, and economic situation faced by the Qin Dynasty, especially the situation of local uprisings and anti Qin rebels defeating the Qin army.
After the Battle of Dingtao, although the Qin Zhanghan army defeated the Xiang Liang army and achieved temporary victory, they did not fundamentally eliminate the main force of the Chu army, and the Qin dynasty was still in a state of turmoil.
After the failure of Xiang Liang, the Chu army was greatly shaken, so they withdrew to the east, defended Pengcheng, and rested their army in preparation for another battle.
After defeating the Xiang Liang army in the Dingtao area, Qin general Zhang Han led his troops across the river during the melee between Zhao general Li Liang and Chen Yu, and began to pacify the anti Qin forces in Zhao territory. Although the Zhao army had tens of thousands of troops, they could not withstand the advance of the Zhang Han army and were defeated in one fell swoop. The capital of Zhao was occupied by the Qin army. Zhao Wang fled north and entered Julu City. Zhang Han's army chased after Julu and stationed troops in the southern suburbs of Julu, preparing to attack Julu.
Zhao General Chen Yu gathered tens of thousands of troops and stationed them north of Julu. Due to its weak military strength and inability to confront the Qin army, the Zhao army sent people to request assistance from the states of Chu, Yan, and Qi.
After receiving the request for assistance from the State of Zhao, King Huai of Chu appointed General Song Yi as the top general, Xiang Yu as the second general, and Fan Zeng as the last general to go to Julu for rescue.
In October of the third year of Emperor Qin II (207 BC), Song Yi led a large army to rescue Zhao and entered the Anyang (now Cao County, Shandong) area. He ordered a halt to the advance and stationed troops for forty-five or six days, but still did not make preparations to continue advancing and rescue Zhao. Xiang Yu and others were very anxious. At this time, the Qin army was intensifying its attack on Julu, and the situation in Zhao became even more critical. In view of this situation, Xiang Yu suggested to Song Yi, "Qin is in a hurry to besiege Zhao, and we should quickly lead troops to cross the river; our army should attack outside, while Zhao's army should attack inside, with a pincer attack from front to back, and Qin's army will surely be defeated!" Song Yi was afraid of the strength of the Qin's army and dared not go to rescue Zhao, but he also dared not openly say that he would not go to rescue Zhao.
Song Yi's passive avoidance of war and delaying tactics went against the strategic mission of saving Zhao, which caused widespread dissatisfaction among the Chu military leaders. In addition, Song Yi did everything possible to calculate, subdue, and exclude Xiang Yu, which aroused Xiang Yu's anger.
As a result, Song Yi was killed by Xiang Yu. Immediately afterwards, King Huai of Chu officially appointed Xiang Yu as the General of the Upper Army, serving as the commander-in-chief of the Chu army.
After the Qin army captured Handan, Zhang Han besieged Julu City with the armies of Wang Li and Shejian, while Zhang Han led his main force to station south of Xilu and built a passage. After Xiang Yu commanded the Chu army, he immediately reorganized the troops, comforted the soldiers, and actively prepared to cross the river and engage in a decisive battle with the Qin army. Zhao Jun Zhang Er led some troops to station in Julu City, while Chen Yu stationed tens of thousands of troops near Hengshan in the northern suburbs of Julu, facing the Chu army from afar, but never dared to fight. Led by Tian Du, the Qi army broke free from Tian Rong's constraints and joined the Chu army's battle against Qin at Julu. Tian An, the grandson of King Jian of Qi, led his army to follow the Chu army in the battle against Qin. The Yan army, commanded by Zang Tu, also entered the Julu area to support the Zhao army in combat.
The Qin army besieged Julu with Wang Li and the Army of Inquiry, while Zhang Han personally led the main force to deal with unexpected situations outside Julu city. At the same time, it could also prevent the collapse of the city and the consumption and fatigue of their main strength.
