在这本书里，我试图对一些延续和变化中的政治哲学问题进行叙述和分析。在今天的知识界，普遍存在着对于传统形式的政治哲学的明显敌意，甚至轻蔑。我希望这部著作，如果无法中止那些人急于抛弃政治哲学传统中的剩余部分，也许至少能够阐明什么才是我们理应丢弃的。
虽然本书所采用的论述方式是历史的，但是我的本意并非想提供关于政治思想的一部全面而详尽的历史。总的看来，选择历史方式，是因为我相信该方式是理解政治哲学重要问题的最好方法，以及由于它作为一项知识事业的特性。我的另一个信念是，一种历史的透视法在暴露我们目前困境的本质方面，比任何别的方法更为有效；如果它不是政治智慧的源泉，至少也是其先决条件。读者很快将发现，许多通常包含在标准历史书中的题目和著作家都被省略了，并且在其他问题上我显著背离了现在流行的解释。在有大量省略的地方，如在处理大部分中世纪政治思想时，不应被推断为与我意见相左的证明，而是一项主要作为解释性工作的不可避免的伴随结果。
